On July 30, 1844, The beginning of organized yachting in the United States is marked by the founding of the New York Yacht Club in the cabin of John Cox Stevens’s schooner Gimcrack. Stevens was a prominent New Yorker known for his passion for sports, and was one of nine founders of the club. In 1845, the Club began the tradition of awarding race winners with silver trophies.
